TRI3D productions and the finalization of TRACE
Ladies and Gentlemen,
As you already know, TRACE, the first 3D short film produced by me is now finished. In the past week i designed the case the Blue Ray cover for it and have now finished it.
I am currently in the process of setting up my side project, TRI3D, a production company focusing on creating films which use the stereoscopic art form as a valuable alternative to 2D story telling. Strictly no gimmicky effects but real aesthetic and immersive imagery which challenge the conventional use and perception of 3D.
Keep an eye out!

TRACE in True colour
Today I was supposed to start my Dissertation properly....that did however not happen. Instead of writing I had the chance to view my film in true colour for the first time ever. I could not stop laughing. Finally losing these gimmicky anaglyph googles was indescribable. The rest of the day i spent re editing........
Middlesex University now has the gear. Lets make things happen.
N17_3D sadly will be no more (in a few weeks), but a new name is found and once its mine, the website will go online too.

Artist in Residence @Middlesex University
Once i will have completed my Master course in September i will be Artist in Residence, running Seminars and Workshops on stereoscopic film making. I will benefit from using the Universities facilities and equipment but also from having access to the staff.
Thank you for the recognition. I appreciate and value that decision immensely.

Traces of stereoscopic beauty
Well, where do i start? I have finished filming and i am now editing the uniquely strange and challenging piece of three dimensional moving imagery in order to fulfill my long ambition of using this new art form to tell a story, which does not rely on spectacle smurf sex on planet NAVI but on true representation of the world surrounding us.
N.B.
The beauty is in the detail, as minute as may be, but it is that which fascinates. Aesthetic choices we take for granted in monoscopic film bring the world alive in stereo.
I will upload snippets of the film soon. In the meantime, check out the Pictures taken by Nick Clark- Lowes on the set of TRACE.

A long time since the last entry......much has happened since!!
1. I received very pleasing feedback for my last two modules!
2. I will shoot my first ever 3D short film next weekend!
3. I will be using a beam splitter rig and not a side by side rig!
4. I am chuffed!
More to come, photos, videos, production diary including incredible new revelations about this extraordinary new art form!!
Till then!

Vessels- finally....and my first ever stereo 3D animation.
Dear friends and followers,
i have finally managed to upload my last research piece. The aim of this project was to analyze movement within the stereoscopic space and to get some idea of how to use this interesting art form, not only in a technically correct way but also exploring some of its capabilities as a creative story telling tool.
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the forthcoming project of mine. I am collaborating with a good friend of mine who happens to be an amazing writer. I have been studying many of Aquilla Rose's stories and came across a short story which, turned into a screen play, will benefit from being told in 3D.
I will keep you up to date on the developments of this production.
In the past few weeks i have been busy learning the art of stereoscopic computer generated imagery. I will post updates of my CGI development too.

The cutting, splicing, cropping and slipping can finally begin!
After a very long time spend exporting different video files I have now finally reached the point in the post production stage of the Vessels choreo where i can finally attempt to be creative and look at the possibilities and restrictions of editing for stereo 3D. My main concern of course is the fast paced movement within the video and whether the speed of the two dancers compromises the impact of the working 3D and if so, how that can be fixed. What will that tell us about this new art form?? Moving Image production has to adapt in order to facilitate 3D. What will the future of music and dance video look like?

24 hour render queue
The 3D post production workflow mainly consists of composition rendering. Once all my footage had been separated into 3D clips and the left and right track is exported (9 hours per 'eye'= 18 long hours) i transferred the clips into After effects. It took me ten minutes to see all clips in 3D, i did however have to export all the footage in 3D as one clip, so that i am able to determine exactly which clips work and which need more adjusting. I have two hours out of 24 left until the export is finished, once that is done I go back into Final Cut and rearrange what needs rearranging and then start all over again............

Hurdles, hurdles and even more hurdles........
While editing this five minute dance piece, I am continuously encountering more obstacles which have to be overcome. It is a great learning experience but it is very frustrating too. In order for me to achieve proper 3D which will not cause the viewer a headache, I need to edit by looking at the 3Dness of an image first before i can use it. Like this it is quite hard to achieve a good looking video, but Ce la vie. We will learn from these mistakes.
The reason for this is as with all my 3D moving image productions, as small as they may have been, I am using the 3D rig as i would a single camera, which in most instances is wrong. The positioning of the camera is not only of aesthetic importance but also of technical significance, by this i mean the 3D factor or the level of working stereoscopic imagery. Every camera parallax demands of the subjects filmed to be in a certain area, if the subject is not staying in this specified area, one is forced to not use it, take on the challenge in post, or if the time and money is there, to re- shoot.
To be continued.........tomorrow

Vessels- capture, alignments, colour corrections and a short holiday in Falmouth!
After two days of Sony HVR troubles, the capture of Tuesdays footage is done! I am now prepping each clip, 150 right and 150 left, once this is done i know what impact my work may have......followed by colour correction to enhance the filter colours. The proper edit will commence on Monday. I am now taking two days out in order to recover from a 7 months in the capitol. My body is still acclimatized to the Kernow atmosphere, which is why I am heading back there to regenerate energy lost and fully charge the batteries for the upcoming five months of intense stereoscopic filming.

First exclusive VESSELS choreo snippet!
Dear Followers,
Please watch this video, an unedited sequence of the 'exploring movement within the 3D space' and tell me what you think. All my THANKS go out to the brilliant Kayleigh and Amy as well as Colin Grey and the two Foundation students Jordan and Simon without whom i would not be doing this project!
Our last filming session will take place this coming Tuesday and the edit will be completed by the end of this month. WATCH this space.
This video (red/blue version will come soon) is shot using Sony HVR- A1E HDV cameras, whereas the previous works were captured using Panasonic home DV handycams.
CHECK out TallShips, the band that let us use their track VESSELS.

N17 3D continued
I just got told that I am expecting too much money...........I am not talking about any one aspect of 3D research here. 3D will be part of your Film Studies curriculum in 5 years time. Take my word for it! The arrival of 3D television and the ever-growing popularity of stereoscopic feature films will demand, not only skilled camera men, DOPs, light surgeons, directors and producers but writers who understand this art form, not mentioning the film theorists and critical thinkers......the new age of moving image production has arrived but i am not seeing it!........Funding could materialize if i give them something that they can publish......please publish everything i write!
I started production on my first big project the other week.....filming commenced on Monday, two camera rigs were used and both camera rigs failed. It is a matter of having access to cameras which allow for quality filming but are also small enough to achieve the correct interocular distance which is needed when filming so close to the action..........A continuous but worth while struggle.
You are able to view two versions of the first practice session of the Vessels choreo 3D project 'Exploration of stereo 3D space'
Again, same old problem..........compressed video sometimes work but in order to show the video here the quality of the images are not good enough anymore to carry the 3D properly.
Please excuse that. I will be uploading shorter pieces in the future, which allows for less quality loss.
Hope you enjoy the videos!

N17 3D update
Dear Readers,
I am still waiting on a reply from the Lansdown Centre concerning the money which I applied for. I believe some of the people on the board should have attended this years BVE at Earls Court, than they would have realized that stereoscopic moving image creation has finally arrived and is here to stay. It becomes even clearer when talking to representatives from Staffordshire and Bournemouth uni.
It is quite obvious to me why institutes are reluctant to invest money into an art form they do not yet know anything about but if they never invest in it they will never find out about it and miss the chance to set new standards.
My first big production is on its way and i do not believe that I will get the funding in time for the shoot...........so I will have to use Panasonic home movie camcorders......that will allow for credible research outcome i am sure!!!!!!!
I am confident though that everything will be O.K.!

The journey must continue....
It has been a very long time since i have posted my last entry. The reasoning behind this is, that I have been very busy trying to raise money for some special 3D gear and to formalize possible PhD research questions.
On the day Arsenal lost 1:3 to ManU, I was on the hunt to find a pub which was broadcasting it in 3D.......the Kick Bar and the George were supposed to, but never did. So I witnessed the loss in normal 2D which was properly good because otherwise I would have been even more depressed. Last weekend, the England v. Wales six nations game was shown across the country in many different cinemas. I obviously got to the cinema in WoodGreen and they were over booked, so I watched that sporting highlight in 2D also. I have however booked my ticket for the 27. February when England will play Ireland. C'mon 3D!
This morning I received a phone call from one of the BroadcastVideoExpos' organizers, he told me that they would like to upgrade me to the V.I.P. status. What can I say, apart from being chuffed! I will get the chance to meet even more interesting people go to even more seminars and drink free coffee
So as you can see, very turbulent past few days for me..............I really did not think that it would be so hard to run ones own research project though, very demanding!
Take care and read you later!
P.S.
I will be working on a little dance 3D piece soon, so keep your eyes on this blog to see the finished product
